Ian was born in Louisiana, USA in 1978 to parents Edna and Robert Somerhalder.
He has a brother, Bob, and a sister, Robyn.
After his parents divorced when he was 13, he lived with his mother.
With his mothers encouragement he began modeling at the age of 10.
He modeled for Calvin Klein, American Eagle Outfitters, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Versace, and Guess? These modeling jobs took him around the world to Paris, Milan and London.
He does not like to talk about his modeling career as he does not want to be thought of as 'just another pretty face'.
He started to pursue acting at the age of 17.
His breakthrough role was playing Boone Carlyle in the 2004 series Lost.
He was the first to be cast in Lost, yet his character was the first killed off.
His most recent and most notable roles is playing Damon Salvatore on the CW series The Vampire Diaries.
Was compared to being a "young Rob Lowe" by Rosie O'Donnell.
