Elena Gilbert - is a slender, athletic seventeen year old girl. She has an olive complexion, brown eyes and long, straight, dark brown hair. Her parents died in a car crash in which she was the only survivor. She lives with her aunt and younger brother. She used to date Matt Donovan, but broke up with him after the passing of her parents. When school starts again she meets and falls in love with Stefan.

Stefan Salvatore - was born in Renesance, Italy. He and his brother, Damon, were changed by the girl they both loved, Katherine. When Stefan discovered she was "dead." Damon and Stefan fought to the death. 500 years later Stefan decided to go to Fell's Church, Virginia where he met Elena--who had a striking resemblance to Katherine. He tried to avoid Elena at all costs. But he couldn't resist.

Damon Salvatore - is Stefan Salvatore's older brother. On the tv show, it implies that him and Stefan have been live for over 145 years, and that there was a love triangle between Damon, Stefan, and Katherine. On the show it hasn't yet told us how he and Stefan became vampires, but in the books Katherine is the one who turned both of them, but she still couldn't decide who she wanted to be with. But later we´ll find out that she always love Stefan. Damon is cynical and likes to antagonize his brother on the show. It's also stated that he and his brother haven't seen each other in 15 years and Damon saying some along the lines of 'Nice haircut. The 90's grunge wasn't looking good for you."Now when Damon is back everything get complicated. Stefan find new love-Elena, which look exactly like Katherine. So when Damon saw Elena first time, he fall in love. Except Elena loves Stefan,but care about Damon too.But at the end Elena will care more about Damon when she discovers he loves her too. So, Is our love triangle back after 145 years?

Caroline Forbes - is a student of Mystic Falls High School and best friends with Bonnie Bennett and Elena Gilbert. Originally portrayed as a shallow and spoiled girl she has grown to be a more caring and selfless person. She had a unstable relationship with Damon Salvatore. Caroline's mother is the sheriff of Mystic Falls with who she had a strained relationship. She began dating Matt Donovan who helped her become a better person. After a car accident Damon fed her some of his blood to help her survive and was later killed by Katherine Pierce turning her into a vampire at the beginning of the second season. Struggling to accept her new reality she helped Tyler Lockwood after he became a werewolf and was forced to break up with Matt due to him not being able to accept her.

Tyler Lockwood - is the son of Mystic Falls' Mayor Lockwood and nephew of Mason Lockwood. Tyler grew up in a privileged lifestyle as the Lockwood family is one of the founding families in Mystic falls. Tyler's father died during the Founder's day festival when he was mistaken for a vampire after reacting to a trap meant to identify "blood suckers". However, Mayor Lockwood was not a vampire, he simply held the werewolf gene. After Tyler's father died, Mason Lockwood (already a werewolf) came into town and eventually Tyler discovered that he too could become a werewolf if he was not careful. If Tyler killed someone, the werewolf gene would be activated and he would transform into a werewolf on every full moon for the rest of his life. Sadly, Katherine, the antagonistic vampire, needed him to become a werewolf and went about finding a way to provoke him into accidentally killing someone. So, on the next full moon, feeling afraid and confused, Tyler transformed. Today, after questioning to whom his loyalties lye ( the werewolves or the Mystic Falls Vampires) Tyler has disappeared. He has gone off alone in an effort to figure things out. His disappearance leaves viewers to wonder: What does Tyler Lockwood have to do with Elena Gilbert's impending sacrifice? and When (if ever) will he come back?

Katherine Pierce - 

Jeremy Gilbert - is Elena's younger brother, and a drug dealer. He lost his virginity to Vicki Donovan (Matt Donovan's younger sister) and it's implied that he's slept with her on more than one occasion because when he confronts Tyler Lockwood that they've done it 'over and over and over and over' as Tyler is dating Vicki. He's a drug dealer and uses the drugs himself, although how he gets the drugs is unknown. Vicky's death gets him into shape and makes him deal with his drug issues. After a while he meets Anna, who introduces him to the vampire world. By the end of the second season he falls in love with Bonnie, Elena's best friend (who is also a witch). A close encounter with death gives him a supernatural power - he can see the dead.

Bonnie Bennett - On the show, she tells Elena on the way to school that her family are descendants of witches who were involved in the Salem Witch Trails. She also posses psychic abilities. When she touched people on their arm or hand, she gets a vision about the past. The exact extent of her powers are as yet unknown. She very kind, and supportive of Elena & Stefan's relationship.

Alaric Saltzman - is introduced in the series as the new history teacher. He shows very caring for Jeremy Gilbert by giving him a second chance to lift up his grades. He has a crush on Jenna Sommers (Jeremy and Elena's aunt). He suspects of Damon Salvatore being the killer of his wife.
